Skybusters Rocketry Club – Meeting Minutes

January 14, 2007
1:00 p.m.
Strongsville Public Library, Strongsville, OH

Attending: Mike Molnar, John Hasenstab, Mike Nowak, Matthew Nowak, Andrew Bays, Mark Coburn, Mark Snock, Pat Easter, Rich Phillips, Les Kramer, Dan Vento, Barry Lynch, Chris Pearson, Ken Holloway, Lee Hamer, Cheryl Cziryak-Hamer, Andrew Cziryak, Hannah Cziryak, James Kral, Alan Tuskes, Belah Tuskes, Chuck Delaney, Steve Stein, Bryan Torok, Bruce Levison, Ben Levison, Martin Dorociak, Mike Peck, and Heidi Kramer.

Membership
Heidi Kramer stated that members must renew by April 1, 2007, or be dropped from the membership list on our website. Membership cards will be sent out to those who have paid membership fees but have not received a card yet. Note: Skybusters charter states that members must be a NAR/TRA member. Heidi will contact the few who paid, but are not listed as members of NAR. Skybuster members age 17 and under do not have to be NAR members.

Promotion
V.P. Mike Peck printed out a limited number of colored club brochures for members to handout at local hobby shops, and interested parties. We will have more made up before the Great Lakes Launch. Heidi Kramer will update the hobby store list on our website so that members can assist in delivering brochures to them.

Club Changes
A motion was made to change the name of our club from “Tri-City Sky Busters” to “Skybusters”. The change is accepted by a majority vote. We will be known as just “The Skybusters” to match our website www.Skybusters.org.

Marty Dorociak will file a notice with NAR for the name change to our Section at NAR headquarters. This will be in time for our section renewal for ’07.

A revised logo and artwork is required to incorporate our new name. New club merchandise with the new logo will be put on Café Press. Members are asked to submit logo artwork soon so we can vote on a new logo in time for the Great Lakes launch. Items for sale to include screen printed and embroidered shirts/patches/hats, etc. It is suggested to keep the colors simple to reduce reproduction costs.

Club Expansion
Ken Holloway from the Erie, PA group gave some details about their club’s desire to merge with the Skybusters due to a decline in paid membership. Basically, they would extend all of their club’s member privileges to us, as we would to them, as a merged club. We would have access to the Erie club’s eastern PA fields and thus give us a summer launch site. This arrangement would be similar to the one we have with NOTRA. We will have an officers meeting between the clubs to work out the details.

Ken mentioned they are in talks with the owner of Troyer Farms (Potato chips) in eastern PA for a launch field. This location would involve only a 1.5 hr trip from Cleveland. Thanks Ken! In order to avoid changing weather conditions in the fall, the Erie Group is going to move up the October Sky launch. We suggested early September, avoiding schedule conflicts with all the July launches in NY and nationally.

TARC & Education
Previous to the meeting, Gerry Freed asked the club to acknowledge Pat Easter at the meeting as the official “TARC & Educational Programs Officer” since he has been acting in this capacity for some time now. Gerry will still be our Senior Advisor, and still is in charge of Club Promotions.

Pat made up a nice list of the 38 teams registered in Ohio. He has contacted all, and has gotten responses from most. Members of the Skybusters are already working with some teams, and all Skybusters are urged to become mentors for the remaining teams. This is a perfect opportunity for club members to get in their service hours. Members can easily fulfill their required 4 hrs. of service per year with just one visit to a TARC team. Skybuster members are the link to these kids’s success as rocketeers!

Website Update
TARC info, as well as all pertinent club activity will be updated on our website. Les Kramer offered to help out with this, but all club officers all have access to update our pages. We still don’t have access to upload photos. We will try to call C-Boss about this. Martin Dorociak will find out the details of using Snapfish.com for our club’s picture sharing.

It was also requested that we get back into publishing flight data after launches, such as motor usage and naming folks with memorable launches. This should be no problem now that we have access to our web pages.

Motors & Kits
Road Runner F & G motors work just fine according to James Kral, except for the one KATO he experienced. They use First Fire/Quickburst type igniters. Cost about $18-$20 each.

Barry Lynch of LOC Precision offered to become a distributor of Road Runners – to keep in stock for us. He also extended a 10% discount to the Skybusters for kit orders. Thanks Barry! He will not be retailing any other motors such as Cesaroni, but will have Estes for sale.

The club will contact Scott Miller for HyperTek, Cesaroni, Loki, and Skyripper motors, and will also contact Contrail & Pratt Hobbies for Contrail Hybrid motors. An attempt will be made to contact Great Lakes Hobby to see what their status is.

There are no arrangements to have a motor storage facility at the Amherst launch farm as of yet.

Great Lakes Launch
Scott Miller and Art Upton will be contacted about being on-site vendors for this year. The event will be a 2-day launch same as last year, on April 28th & 29th. All final details will be covered on our April 15th meeting in the Strongsville library.

Alan Tuskes (also a MTMA club member) presented his idea of having a Regional NAR competition at our Great Lakes launch. The competition would consist of 6 events and hopefully draw the necessary participants to qualify as a regional launch. Otherwise, it would fall into the open launch category, but Alan feels that with the right promotion, this would not be the case. After some discussion, we felt that if a 2nd low-power rack of pads was set up for competition use, the Regional Competition is a go! This will hopefully draw even more folks to our launch, and be more appealing to vendors such as Art Upton to sell kits and motors. MTMA will be responsible for organizing the competition, and the Skybusters will post all information on the upcoming GLRMR page.

Treasurer’s Report
Present balance: $1420.50

Future Business
New equipment update:
Rocket tracking devices cannot be ordered for our club until we establish a Canadian buyer to bring them back to the United States. This is to avoid an FCC issue that does not affect the usage of the devices once we get them. Mike Peck will make arrangements for these, and may have them available for the Great Lakes Launch.

We will ask Warren Farr to supply the Skybusters with several “Chute Tamer” devices once he starts his first production runs. Martin Dorociak proposes to utilize them at the Air Show in September so we can do our demo launch, officially being a part of the show and avoid tent costs. These devices keep mid-power rockets on the field, and could be one of the best developments in rocketry since dual-deployment and hybrids.

Incorporation
Bryan Torok submitted copies of documents required for club incorporation. This is an issue that will be looked into even more closely this year. Thanks Bryan!

Then next regular club meeting will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2007, at 1:00 p.m., at the Strongsville Public Library

Respectfully submitted,

Heidi Kramer, Secretary
Skybusters Rocketry Club
